Walk in Peace : Press Release
For Immediate Release
A “walk in peace” is taking place in Brighton and Hove on Saturday 24th September 2016 to remember people who have died as a result of drug or alcohol abuse or addiction.
Organised by local not-for-profit group Middleway Sangha, who run mindfulness based addiction recovery meetings at their centre in Hove, the aim is to remember those who have died as a result of addiction and to raise awareness of the need for greater compassion for people with addiction and their families.
Nick Gully, Director of Middleway says
“The more science tells us about addiction and the brain, the more we can see that addiction is an illness rather than a lack of willpower. People with addiction are good people who need to get well, not bad people who need to be good”.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics show the rate of recorded drug deaths more than double what it was 20 years ago.
Deaths related to drug use have risen to an all-time high, with Blackpool now considered twice as bad as anywhere else in England. Just a few years ago one person a week was dying in Brighton and Hove as a result of drug misuse. However, once known as the drugs capital of the UK, Brighton has dropped off the list.
With the closure of the detoxification ward at Millview Hospital, there have been local concerns about the options available for people who wish to abstain and recover from their addictions. “There needs to be greater investment in treatment services for people with addiction that are deeply rooted in a compassionate model of recovery” added Nick, who is the former Director of Addiction Services for the Priory Hospital in London.
